Online casino sites crippled by DDOS attacks
Several online poker rooms and casino sites have recently suffered attacks which caused malfunctioning on their sites.
The DDOS attacks, or Distributed Denial of Service, are caused when the attacker bombards the site’s servers with traffic from many different locations, so that they get flooded, preventing legitimate traffic from accessing the site. A virus is often involved, sent from a remote computer.
The goal of the DDOS is to prevent the site from functioning. Depending on the scale and success of the attack, the victim site may slow down and stop working efficiently, or may come to a complete standstill.
Full Tilt Poker was reportedly among the sites affected by the DDOS and some sites were down for a while. In a one week period over 30 sites were attacked, causing major losses for the online poker and casino sites involved.
There have been previous cases of DDOS attacks, thought to be perpetrated by competitors, hackers or people seeking to extort money from online gambling sites.
Similar attacks have been seen all over the world in various industries. In Estonia, a young man was fined the equivalent of a year’s salary for launching an attack on government sites and systems.
An American man charged with the same crime, a DDOS attack against auction site Ebay, faced 10 years in jail for his crime and a $250,000 fine.
It is not known yet who was responsible for the recent attacks on gambling sites, although rumour has it that organized criminal gangs from Russia are behind the attacks.
Online casinos need to step up their security to deal with these issues. The high level of competition among casino sites means that players faced with a shutdown or slow service are highly likely to switch to another gambling provider.
